Alex’s design notes

Faith graphics.
What makes them work.

Eight references, studied for their artwork, placement and technique. The useful details to carry into our own development.

The strongest graphics connect one clear idea with deliberate color, scale and surface detail.

All images are Alex’s supplied references. Palettes are visual approximations. Photos do not confirm factory methods, physical dimensions, hand feel or selling performance.

Technique, without guessing.

Separate the visible effect from the process we would test.

Close view of the camera’s halftone dots and broken green coverage
Halftone + distressDots and broken coverage create tone with one visible green.
Close view of patterned blue letters and their pale irregular outlines
Appliqué effectPatterned fill and stitchlike edges suggest fabric. Construction is unconfirmed.
Close view of light pink letters with yellow offset graphic edges
Drawn dimensionYellow offset edges create depth. They do not establish puff print.

Choose the process after the effect.

Screen print, digital print and transfer are application routes. Watercolor, distress and shadow describe appearances. Appliqué and embroidery describe construction.

Sample on the actual body.

Set dimensions from the garment pattern. Ask the printer to prove fine detail, color, registration and hand feel. For stitched work, check backing, puckering and wash behavior.

My three favorites

Chosen for different strengths. This is my design judgment, not a sales ranking.

Butter floral hoodie

Favorite overall

The most resolved balance of garment color, open space, flowers and type. Large enough to matter; delicate enough to wear easily.

Carry forward: the airy composition.

made. camera graphic

Strongest idea

The object gives the phrase meaning. One green and purposeful texture are enough. The missing “of” in the supplied copy needs correction.

Carry forward: a visual idea before decoration.

LOVE LIKE JESUS

Best material direction

The tiny floral fill, irregular edges and two pink accents give big lettering a softer character. A useful starting point for real appliqué development.

Carry forward: patterned material inside bold letters.

What makes
a good graphic?

These are the decisions I’d use to judge our own work.

  1. A clear first read

Recognize the word, symbol or silhouette before studying the details.

  2. Color with a job

Let the garment act as a real color. Assign separate roles to main, supporting and accent colors.

  3. Deliberate scale and space

Leave room around the message. Keep hoods, seams and rib clear unless crossing them is intentional.

  4. Detail that earns its place

Pattern, texture and small motifs should strengthen the idea and survive the chosen process.

  5. One coherent drawing language

Match the character of the type, illustration and surface treatment.

  6. A convincing physical result

Proof the words, print or stitch the details, and judge the sample on the real garment.

Inspired by it. Developed as ours.

Borrow the design principle. Redraw the art, recompose the placement and develop our own material story.

Botanical composition referenceStarting reference

Airy botanical artwork

Keep the lightness; develop a different floral composition.

Keep
Open ground, a gathered stem structure and a restrained supporting line.
Change
New flower drawings, an asymmetric spray, a new phrase and different lettering. Recompose the chest/back relationship.
Sample
Soft multicolor print with a small embroidered accent on selected blooms. This mixed technique is a new proposal.

Do not trace the bouquet or retain its exact text frame.

Concept-led single-color camera referenceStarting reference

An object that carries the message

Use the camera’s conceptual clarity to create a different idea.

Keep
One meaningful object, a limited palette and texture with a purpose.
Change
Explore a lantern and “Carry the light.” Draw an original silhouette and set the phrase beside it instead of copying the three-part stack.
Sample
One-color halftone print on a light cotton body; proof the smallest marks on the selected fabric.

Working concept only. Phrase and original artwork remain to be developed.

Pattern-filled lettering referenceStarting reference

Lettering with real material

Make patterned fabric the main design feature.

Keep
Bold readable letters, a small-scale fill and a controlled accent.
Change
Explore “GROW IN GRACE” in custom compact lettering, fine gingham fabric and one trailing botanical accent.
Sample
Printed cotton fabric appliqué with a defined stitch edge on a washed sage tee. Check counters, stability and wash behavior.

New construction proposal, not a claim about the reference.

The test for our version

Would it still have its own identity beside the reference? A new slogan or color alone is a weak change. The idea, drawing, composition and material decisions should form a distinct design.
